Major Duties: - Maintains the general condition and appearance of all indoor and outdoor athletic facilities including outdoor intramural fields and game spaces.- Provides work direction and schedules work assignments for M-3.5 Recreation/Sports Specialist I, M-2.5 groundspersons/Laborers II and/or M-2 Groundspersons/Laborers I, and participates in the work performed by these positions.- Lays out and marks five (5) football fields, including the varsity field in Waldo Stadium, four (4) softball diamonds, five (5) soccer fields and one (1) baseball field.- Mows and trims practice and playing fields and associated grounds, using manual and self propelled mowers, a riding mower and hand tools.- Applies fertilizers and pesticides, and waters fields and associated grounds.- Operates brush hog mowers, seeding equipment and rototillers in maintaining the grass surfaces of practice fields and game spaces, and operates front-end loaders and tractors to move materials and equipment.- Lays out and sets up indoor and outdoor spaces for athletic contests and practices and nonathletic uses. - Moves, assembles, dismantles and removes to storage areas portable bleachers used at intercollegiate and intramural athletic contests and nonathletic events.
Minimum Qualifications: - Must be able to read and comprehend written instructions and safety regulations regarding the performance of job duties, and must be able to understand and comply with verbal instructions.- Prior athletic grounds experience.- Possession of a valid Michigan commercial driver's license for operation of equipment.- Able to raise 100 lbs dead weight to a height of three feet (36") with or without mechanical assistance.- Able to raise and move materials and equipment weighing up to 1.5 tons with mechanical assistance and with the aid of other employees.- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job and use the tools of the trade.- Must be able to tolerate the full range of weather conditions.- Possession of a Michigan Dept of Agriculture Pesticide license, category 3A, 3B and 6, or able to obtain one within 40 days of hire.- Ability to be exposed to paint fumes, paint thinners, gasoline, fertilizers, pesticides and other landscaping chemicals and compounds.- Must be able to work irregular hours, weekends and shift changes with a 48 hour notice.- Please see the complete job description for full physical requirements of the position. - A physical examination administered by the employer's designated physician is required.
