Responsible for all aspects of design, development, optimization, production, testing and documentation of optical thin-film coatings to drawing specifications. Duties will include, but are not limited to:
Independently perform research, design, and development of thin films coatings and materials to meet spectral and environmental specifications.
Development, evaluation, characterization and optimization of coating processes using thermal evaporation, electron beam and plasma assist deposition to meet drawing requirements.
Computer simulation and modelling of coating performance.
Set up, oversee, and evaluate durability and environmental testing of coatings according to print specifications.
Interpret prints to determine coating spectral specifications and feasibility.
Interpret prints to determine coating environmental and durability requirements and test sequences. Evaluate and document test results.
Work with customers in all stages of quoting and development stages to arrive at producible specifications.
Perform root cause analysis of product failures and implement corrective action.
Perform basic troubleshooting of vacuum chambers. Interface with equipment manufacturers during upgrades and repairs.
Determine tooling needs and interface with engineering personnel during manufacture.
Provide Sales with estimates to quotes, and assist with customer support.
Communicate and interact with vendors and colleagues within and outside the organization.
Plan and oversee the sequence of operations for coating deposition and testing processes.
Generate, document and formalize new designs, work instruction, and other supporting documents of the coating process.
Create and maintain standard operating procedures for all processes. Optimize process parameters and document.
Develop new optics cleaning processes, monitor and improve existing SOPs.
Research, specify and recommend purchase of capital equipment.
Design, development and manufacturing of thin film optical coatings.
Use of thin-film design software (preferably FilmStar)
Hands-on experience in multiple conventional thin film deposition technologies such as thermal and e-beam deposition and plasma-assisted deposition.
Full understanding of thin film deposition process, optical monitoring, high vacuum technology, and optical measurements.
Ability to interpret customer’s prints, drawings and specifications for optical components.
Strong verbal and written communication skills. Must be able lead technical program presentations for customers and internally.
Proficiency with Excel, Word, and other Microsoft products especially as that relates to collecting, analyzing and presenting data to the customer and internally.
Knowledge of measuring and testing methods of optical coatings including spectrophotometry, MIL spec environmental testing requirements, laser damage.
Proficient in algebra, trigonometry, geometry, conversions and other basic mathematical calculations.
Experience with ISO standards and ITAR regulations. Able to fulfil the requirements and adhere to their principles.
Familiar with working in and maintaining a cleanroom environment.
Able to work both independently, and as a team.
Lean manufacturing and six sigma black belt, or green belt certification is desirable.
Education and experience
Bachelor of Science in Material Science, Physics, Chemistry, or equivalent is strongly preferred. M.S in Physics or Optics with background in thin films is preferred.
10 years of optical/ thin film design, development and production experience is strongly preferred.
