This Senior Chemist position in the Technology Group calls for a skilled hands-on scientific expert who prepares liquid chemical formulations and conducts testing in one or more liquid application areas, such as: paints and coatings, adhesives, sealants, cosmetics, and/or inks. Responsible for making samples, characterizing raw materials, and evaluating finished products using state-of-the-art equipment and instruments. Primary function is to lead liquid application projects following stage-gate methodology resulting in launch and commercialization of new/improved products. Additional duties include supporting Sales/Marketing and Operations to address matters and handle requests relating to liquid application products.
Formulate liquid systems using Estron resins and additives as components, measure key properties, and test performance in liquid applications to help drive Estron’s product development efforts.
Serve as an expert resource for technical support of customers in use of Estron’s products, and in support of Estron Sales staff for new/improved product introductions.
Build effective working relationships with Estron Sales & Marketing staff and key contacts at Estron’s customers and related trade organizations.
Define and propose evaluation programs to screen new product candidates in appropriate liquid application areas and for specific market opportunities in support of Estron’s quality, innovation and sustainability initiatives.
Work with Powder Coating Applications staff to identify areas of common interest that relate to testing of raw materials and finished product samples.
Maintain a current knowledge of liquid application technologies, test methods / standards, and related competitive products in Estron’s target markets.
Establish and maintain a program of benchmarking competitive liquid coating products and Estron’s products against standardized performance criteria in Estron’s target market segments.
Work with Sales & Marketing and Operations (Procurement, Manufacturing) to evaluate raw materials, resolve quality issues (customer complaints, manufacturing non-conformances) and answer questions posed by suppliers and customers.
Ensure that liquid application lab complies with EH&S regulations and ISO 9000 requirements, materials in lab are used/stored properly, and equipment is kept in good working order by regularly calibrating and performing scheduled maintenance.
Manage Estron’s database of liquid product Technical Data Sheets and Technical Briefs relating to liquid application products.
Using principles of formulation design and appropriate liquid application test methods, prepare and evaluate new liquid formulations and other compositions to meet customer requirements and/or liquid application performance targets.
Outfit the liquid application lab with essential equipment and introduce protocols for preparation and testing of liquid products.
Manage and conduct liquid formulation and liquid application testing as required in support of projects, and train laboratory staff as needed in related techniques and procedures.
Assist in defining liquid application projects and share duties with Sales / Marketing staff to manage projects in accordance with stage-gate protocols to ensure timely launch of new/improved products.
Prepare and oversee all Lab Work Requests pertaining to liquid applications.
Collaborate with Sales / Marketing staff to identify and define customer needs and market opportunities.
Evaluate performance of new and improved products designed/developed in-house by R&D (Synthesis) staff and coordinate characterization of properties of raw materials and product samples with QC and Analytical staff.
Assist Technical Director or designee in ensuring current product and new product compliance with TSCA, REACh and other national or regional regulatory agency requirements.
Approve acquisition of chemicals and equipment for laboratory. May approve Purchase Orders for amounts <$1000.
Develop starting point formulations and author liquid product Technical Data Sheets.
Assist in establishing new liquid product procedures, specifications, and testing requirements.
Assist in quality activities related to liquid product design/development, applications evaluations, and customer complaint investigations.
Speak with and/or visit customers as needed to support identification of new liquid product opportunities and provide technical support of new liquid product development / launch activities.
Minimum combination of education and experience:
PhD or MS in chemistry or related science with at least 5 years of relevant industrial experience, OR
BS degree in chemistry or related science and at least 10 years of relevant industrial experience/training.
Essential training in industrial lab environmental, health and safety (EH&S) procedures; ISO 9000, Six Sigma, chemical regulations, and chemical hygiene training a plus.
Proven ability to formulate, prepare, characterize, and/or evaluate liquid application products in one or more of the following areas: paints and coatings, adhesives, sealants, cosmetics, inks.
