The Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering Department is currently searching for an Engineer II/Research Engineer to join their team. This is a regular, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.
This position is a member of our Advanced Engineering Laboratory (AEL). The AEL group's main function is the development of oceanographic instrumentation to test developing theories in oceanography and to enhance current research projects in other disciplines within the community.
Independently write, modify, and debug data processing. Vehicle control and device driver software in python, matlab, perl, C, C++, and BASH.
In the course of development and debug, interact directly with hardware and other software tools. The ideal candidate will have a sufficient theoretical background to develop simple algorithms from first principles and/or implement other people's published algorithms given sufficient mentorship.
Deploy to sea 1-2 months per year with systems you have developed or those developed by others.
Develop documentation for both internal and external use.
Assist in architecting large software systems.
Particularly if hired at the Research Engineer Level; assist in writing progress reports, papers and portions of proposals under supervision. May grow into some project management responsibilities with time.
Perform other duties as assigned.

DESIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Engineer II level*:
Master's degree in an engineering or appropriate field with minimal experience
Bachelor's degree in engineering or computer science with a very strong hands-on background in both disciplines
An acceptable candidate may have an unrelated degree provided that they can show at least 10-15 years or highly relevant work and provide examples of prior work
Research Engineer level*:
Ph.D. in related engineering field, with practical engineering or computer science experience
Master's degree in an engineering or computer science with several years of related experience
Bachelor's degree in an engineering or appropriate field with more than five years of related experience
Substantial experience with python, matlab, C and C++ required
Substantial experience with Linux and QT strongly preferred
Hands on experience with instrumentation and hardware specifically including rs-232, network protocols, and ability to set up simple power and communications test circuits desired
Must have the ability to obtain and maintain security clearance (Must be a US citizen or permanent resident or otherwise not be classified as a foreign national under the terms of ITAR/EAR).
Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a TWIC card
Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to, ability to lift 25-50 lbs independently, 3 times per day, including lifting above the shoulders. Carry between 25-50 lbs, 4 times per day. Visual abilities to include peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements include the ability to hear and respond to instructions, communicate effectively in loud areas (pier/dock, warehouse). Other physical tasks include occasional prolonged standing/walking; use of hands for basic /fine grasping and manipulation, kneeling, bending, and stooping. Will be exposed to excessive cold, heat, and/or humidity, grease and oils, hazardous substances or specimens, electrical/mechanical/power equipment hazards, prolonged work hours, and/or extended periods at sea. Physical duties are subject to change.
SEA DUTY CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTIONS:
May work at least 8 hours per day and, at times in excess of 12 hours per day, 7 days per week. Sleep and work hours can deviate from those on land. May be expected to work on watch schedule (such as 8 hours on and 8 hours off or 12 hours on and 8 hours off) for all or part of a cruise or to work as hours are needed to accomplish the planned work. May need to travel during holidays and for long distances to and from foreign ports. May experience rudimentary living and working conditions, with shared and basic living quarters and laboratories. May experience bad or extreme weather conditions, including heavy seas, winter weather or hot, tropical weather. Work on deck may occur in both hot and cold conditions around the clock. Sea conditions will lead to active ship motion. Should be able to climb steep and vertical ladders and able to enter and exit compartments through hatches, doors, and sills. Should be able to carry heavy gear and participate in the loading and unloading of the ship as well as in the activities on deck and in the labs during the cruise. Shipboard environment may include: confined areas, shared sleeping quarters (berths) and bathroom facilities, small and basic berthing, fixed meal times and basic menus. Modest levels of heating, cooling, ventilation, and illumination, limited or no email and internet access and limited off-duty and recreational facilities (library, lounge, movies). May be exposed to potential allergens and irritants, including paint fumes. May experience constant and intermittent loud noises, and slippery and uneven surfaces.
