The Global Cellulose Fibers Business is seeking an experienced development scientist/engineer to support new product development efforts at our Global Innovation Center in Federal Way, WA. This hands-on role is responsible for safely planning, conducting and documenting laboratory- and pilot-scale experimental work needed to develop new cellulose fiber-based products and the processes for manufacturing them. Experimental work may also target technical support objectives of our manufacturing system (e.g., contributing to efforts to optimize manufacturing processes or grade specifications for existing cellulose fiber products).
The incumbent may also act in a lead operations role in pilot- or semi-commercial scale settings to produce customer samples for market acceptance trials. This position reports into the New Product Development organization.
Conduct hazard assessments, develop job safety analyses for all work performed. Develop standard operating procedures where needed
Plan, conduct, and document experimental work that meets the data and information needs of new product development or manufacturing support-focused projects.
Function in either a team leader or support role in experimental work or in pilot or semi-commercial production operations.
Travel as needed to supplier, manufacturing or customer sites to conduct process/equipment trials and support scale-up and manufacturing process development efforts.
Summarize and interpret experimental data to arrive at and communicate facts and data-based results and conclusions.
Work productively and collaboratively in a cross-functional team setting to meet new product development and technical support project objectives. Interface productively with suppliers, co-workers and customers.
Proven capability to work safely in an industrial Research & Development or manufacturing environment. Highly focused on personal and team safety; proactive in ensuring that all work is conducted in a safe manner.
5+ years’ experience in a Research & Development academic or industrial environment.
Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, engineering or other technical discipline field
A working knowledge of kraft pulping and bleaching processes preferred. Able to work safely with kraft pulping and bleaching chemicals and other chemicals commonly used in the pulp & paper industry.
Experience with/knowledge in broader pulp & paper process/equipment areas (e.g., raw material prep., screening, stock preparation, coating, web handling, converting, etc.) a definite plus.
Ability to work productively in a cross-functional team environment
Ability to analyze, summarize and communicate technical data using MS Office software.
Excellent planning, critical thinking and decision making skills
Able to work in varying temperatures, in dusty and noisy conditions, work from heights, and in confined/restricted areas
Be able to lift 2-20 pounds regularly, climb steps and ladders, and stand or work up to 3 hours at a time for 10-13 hours when necessary
Successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen, background check, and physical
