The Theatre Scene Shop Supervisor assists the Theatre Arts Technical Director in the safe operation of the Marquette Theatre scenic, lighting and paint areas for all of the Marquette Theatre productions. The Theatre Scene Shop Supervisor primarily manages the construction of theatre scenery, assists in the construction, placement, and rigging of scenery for departmental productions, performs general maintenance and upkeep of shop machinery and tools, helps to plan and organize the construction projects, and supervises student workers in the construction and painting of theatre scenery. Additionally, this individual assists in the hang and focus of lighting equipment and general supervision of all lighting and electric needs for the theatre productions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1.Maintain safe operation of all tools in the Helfaer Theatre scenic, paint and electric shops. Perform regular maintenance and upkeep of shop machinery and tools. Ensures an accident-free learning and work environment by enforcing safety rules and supervising students when operating scenery shop tools and equipment. 2.Manage construction of all scenic elements in consultation with the Theatre Arts Technical Director. 3.Construct scenery as directed by the Theatre Arts Technical Director. 4.Assist in the supervision of student workers in the construction and painting of scenic elements. 5.Assist in the supervision of student workers in the implementation of lighting and sound elements. 6.Supervise the daily operation of the theatre scenery and electrics shops including managing the inventory of tools through the proper check in procedures as well as end of session clean up procedures. 7.Assist in the development of shop construction drawings in consultation with the Theatre Arts Technical Director. 8.Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
A Bachelor’s degree in Theatre with an emphasis in Technical Theatre is required
At least two years practical work experience in the technical preparation and construction of theatre scenery and stage units is required.
Supervisory skills are required.
Mechanical skills in the use of hand and power tools are required.
Exceptional carpentry and construction skills are required.
The ability to read and understand floor plans, color renderings, lighting plots and paperwork, and advanced construction plans is required.
Strong oral communications skills are required.
The ability to instruct on material relevant to technical production labs is required.
The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
The ability to lift and carry materials weighing between 50 – 100 pounds on a daily basis is required.
The position requires prolonged standing, frequent bending or stooping and climbing of steps and ladders.
Occasionally may be required to work on stage grid.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
General lighting and electrical skills are preferred. Scenic painting skills are preferred. General knowledge of set up and operation of sound equipment is preferred.
