Summary of Position: A Researcher position is open in the new Lab of Prof. Elias. The successful candidate will actively participate maintaining the Lab, and will be responsible for independently conducting a series a major experiments to promote the Lab research projects. The objective is to make significant scientific achievements and produce high impact publications. The project consist in the study of lactonase-based coating formulations on biocorrosion and biofouling processes.
Essential and Other Functions: 60% - Carrying out laboratory experiments Independently conduct protein purification, protein characterization, coating studies, microscopy studies, sequencing (DNA and RNA) studies, as well as field studies in the various locations the lab has access to for the evaluation of experimental, enzymatic coatings
20% - Design experiments To design routine experiments in frame with the research project objectives, on both a day-to-day and long-term basis.
10% - Prepare results for presentation, articles, and grant submissions The results of the project will be published in major journals in the field and presented at national and international meetings. This position will require data compilation and figure preparation that will be incorporated into manuscripts to be written and submitted for publication as well as posters, oral presentations, and grant submission.
5% - Archive Data and Materials Archive all experiments performed in the course of the study, as well as the generated reagents in accordance to lab convention. All strains, DNA constructs and reagents are to be maintained, with a full record of the work.
5% - Routine laboratory maintenance and assist Lab co-workers Assist in maintaining a ready supply of strains, solutions, chemicals, and various lab reagents to ensure efficient functioning of the lab. The candidate is also expected to assist other Lab co-workers.
Supervision Supervise undergraduate students that will help to promote the research project.
Working Conditions The majority of the work will be performed in a standard laboratory setting. Significant amount of work times involves field trips to the experimental sites, including lakes and river sites around the metro area, the Duluth Superior Harbor, and any other site in the state of MN or beyond. The associate may be required to travel in the USA or abroad to attend scientific conferences.
Essential Qualifications Ph.D. in biochemistry, microbiology, engineering or equivalent is required. Extensive experience in protein biochemistry is essential, and a demonstrated ability to independently design and carry out research projects and publish research results in a timely fashion.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with deep sequencing techniques, coating formulations and field work is preferred.
